What is Macrolane®?
Macrolane®
is almost identical to the very well-known dermal filler called
Restylane. Made by the Swedish company Q-Med, Restylane is the leading
brand in the world with a very good safety profile - hence why our
experts use it and the other Restylane family of fillers at Absolute
Aesthetics. Both Macrolane®
and Restylane are Hyaluronic Acid, which is the naturally occurring
substance in the body that draws water into the skin and subcutaneous
tissue, giving the soft hydrated look of youth.
Who is suitable?
The two main groups of patients who benefit from Macrolane®
are ladies with smaller breasts who would like to keep the shape but
increase the breast size and increase their cleavage, and the second
group are ladies who have lost breast volume either by age or
breast-feeding, who would like fuller breasts. Before and after
pictures of each of these are shown - the before and after pictures
are only one hour apart in each case, hence the pen marks are still on
the skin from the procedure and the plasters can be seen that cover
the 2 mm wounds.
It is also only suitable for women who wish to increase their cup size
by approximately 1 size. Those who want a very large volume increase
need surgical implants. All patients over 40 must have a mammogram
that is a clear within one year of the procedure and anyone under 40
with a family history of breast disease must also have ultrasound or
mammogram that is clear.
What is the recovery?
As Macrolane®
treatment is walk in walk out breast surgery under local anaesthetic,
recovery in Absolute Aesthetics is putting on a supportive bra and
then having a drink of your choice - usually tea or coffee! Patients
leave after the procedure able to go back to virtually normal life.
The most important thing is a very supportive bra with a very good
band or under wiring that supports the area under the breast itself.
This helps with the shaping of the breast as the Macrolane®
settles. The supportive bra should be worn day and night for seven
days, and day time only for the next seven days.
Antibiotics are given for the first three days and patients told to
take regular paracetamol or simple painkillers for these three days
also. It is also suggested that sport or any activity that causes
excessive movement of the breasts is avoided for two weeks.
How long does it last?
As it is a natural substance, Macrolane®
is slowly broken down and reabsorbed. Current experience showed this
varies between people but by 12 to 18 months most people have lost
about half of the volume. However this can be topped up for much less
than the original cost.
How much does it cost?
Like most fillers Macrolane®
is charged by the volume used. In addition, as Macrolane®
is starting to penetrate the market, the company is reducing the price
and so the procedure is becoming less expensive. At the time this is
written, there has just been a further reduction of price and the
basic volume (100 mls each side) starts at £2200. However, if more
volume is required, there is a further small charge for each extra
syringe needed.
